Now, more than ever, businesses in Ontario are looking for ways to save costs and be more energy-efficient. That's where the SMALL BUSINESS LIGHTING program comes in. Under this program, qualifying businesses can get up to $1,000 worth in energy-efficient lighting and equipment upgrades. Plus get access to further incentives.
You'll get easy and effortless energy-efficient upgrades that will go a long way toward reducing your electricity consumption and managing your monthly electricity costs.
We supply, install, clean up and recycle – making it easy for you. An authorized, licensed electrical contractor will make an appointment to complete your retrofit at your convenience.

Who can Participate?
A wide variety of businesses with an electricity demand of less than 50 kW such as clothing stores, independent restaurants, dry cleaners, medical offices, beauty salons, convenience stores, garages and other small retailers can participate in the SMALL BUSINESS LIGHTING program.

How do you Know if your Business has an Electricity Demand of 50 kW?
If your Hydro Ottawa bill only shows use measured only in kilowatt hours (kWh), then your annual electricity demand is likely 50 kW or less. If it shows kW or kVA, then your business likely uses more than 50 kW a year.

How Does SMALL BUSINESS LIGHTING Work?
Assess your Business
A business representative from Hydro Ottawa contact stores and businesses in your area that have an electricity demand of less than 50 kW. The representative will offer a free energy assessment of your lighting and water-heating equipment to help identify specific opportunities for becoming more energy-efficient.
Identify your Options
The primary focus is on lighting upgrades, but other electricity savings will also be identified for your consideration. After the assessment, you can decide whether or not to move forward with a retrofit. If you decide to go ahead, a signed work order form and customer agreement will get things under way.
Install the Upgrades
Funding of up to $1,000 is provided for new energy-efficient lighting and equipment otherwise known as a retrofit (including the cost of materials and labour). An appointment will be made for a licensed electrical contractor to come and complete the retrofit. There may be opportunities for further energy efficiency retrofits above the $1,000 allowance. Further incentives apply beyond the $1,000 in upgrades. Speak to Hydro Ottawa representative for more information.
Helping your Business Save Money
Your Hydro Ottawa representative will:
- Quickly determine where – and how – your business could save on your electricity costs by becoming more energy-efficient, with a focus on lighting improvements.
- Walk you through your choices and the potential monthly savings. The first $1,000 spent on improvements carries no charge to you.
- Arrange with Hydro Ottawa for an approved licensed, experienced electrical contractor to do the installations. Once you’ve chosen the improvements you want, and for a time that is most convenient and will not interfere with your operation, you're on your way. Remember, the retrofits you pursue are up to you.
